Evening Sunset Hike in Stockholm

There is something special about the Swedish summer evening. As the day begins to slow down, the forest grows quieter. Depending on the season, we may walk beneath the midnight glow around Midsummer or follow the long pink and orange sunsets of late summer.

The wind settles among the pine trees, birdsong changes with the hour, and the lakes reflect the colours of the sky. This guided hike follows forest trails and smaller paths through old pine forests, across smooth granite outcrops and alongside quiet lakes. Along the way we pause often—not because we have to, but because the landscape invites it. We explore at an unhurried pace, sharing stories about the forest, its wildlife and the traditions that have shaped these landscapes for centuries. During the evening you will also learn the basics of map reading and orienteering, an essential skill in the Swedish outdoors. A Swedish fika with coffee or tea and seasonal snacks is enjoyed beside the water or on a warm rock overlooking the forest. The route combines established trails with short sections off-trail, allowing us to discover places that many visitors never reach.

 Other Hikers on TripAdvisor…

”I recommend The Green Trails without any doubt ! We were looking for an off trail nature hike not too far from the swedish capital and we were very filled with happiness after the trip. The guide is very kind and everything is managed properly. We loved as well the philosophy of this compagny which is respectul about the natural environment (from the delicious food wich is vegan to the efforts made to keep the area clean) . Do not hesitate !”

”We booked an all-day hike with Pieter after reading other travelers’ reviews of his tours. We weren’t disappointed! The weather was beautiful, Pieter was fun, informative and well-organized, and we had a wonderful day walking off-trail through the gorgeous Tyresta national forest. I highly recommend this activity if you want to learn about and enjoy the natural beauty around Stockholm.”

”My boyfriend and I just returned from our trip and I cannot thank our tour guides enough for making the experience so great. They were so knowledgeable and we ended up being the only ones on that tour that day so it felt like a very personable VIP experience. We were taken on all sorts of different habitats within the nature hike. Great for pictures and just soaking in on Swedish native wildlife. We chatted a ton and bonded eating our vegetarian lunches, it felt like we were hanging out and having a nature day with some friends. I highly recommend them for there professionalism and just overall attention to having customers experience something memorable. Thanks again I hope to be back!”

”It was absolutely worth the money! Our guide Manny was friendly and very knowledgable and passionate about the forest. He was happy to chat with us and give us information on the forest, but he also knew how to keep quiet so we could all enjoy the peacefulness of the area. The group was small with just 7 of us plus Manny so that meant we could ask lots of questions. We hiked for about 2 hours then stopped for lunch which was freeze dried reindeer stew. Manny showed us how to build a fire (I got to light it myself with a tinder stick and knife!). Sitting at lunch on a rock overlooking a lake, you couldn’t hear anything except nature’s sounds. It was beautiful. Then Manny took us ‘off-track’ for the second part of our hike, which made us feel like we were really immersed in the landscape. Overall it was an awesome day!”

Stockholm Summer Evenings - Photography & Scenic Views

Evenings with the seasons

Early & late season: We spend a lot of time in the 'golden hour', when the light hits the surroundings from the side rather than from above, creating a mystical, fairy-tale like forest landscape. Followed by long-stretched, orange sunsets.

Mid season: The famous 'midnight sun', when the sun never sets, is a concept many visitors visit Sweden for. Even though Stockholm is not located high enough to the North, we do catch a glimpse of that: the sun sets before midnight, but as it stays just under the horison, one half of the sky is always illuminated. Creating a magical 'white night' glow that lasts until the sun rises again around 3:00 AM!

About the Hike

Our evening begins while the forest is still full of daylight. As we leave the city behind, the landscape changes from roads and villages to moss-covered rocks, old pines and clear lakes. The pace is gentle and adapted to the group. Some sections follow forest trails, while others lead us across open bedrock or through the trees where there is no marked path. These quieter places often reveal details that are easy to overlook: fresh animal tracks in the sand, lichens growing on centuries-old pines, the scent of wild rosemary after warm weather, or the stillness that settles over the forest as evening approaches.

Throughout the walk your guide shares knowledge about Swedish nature, the history of these forests and the animals that live here. We also introduce the fundamentals of orienteering, showing how a simple map and compass can help you understand the landscape around you. As the evening light softens, we stop for a traditional Swedish fika beside one of the lakes before continuing through the changing colours of the forest. No two evenings are quite the same. Around Midsummer the sun barely disappears below the horizon, while later in the season the sky often fills with long shades of pink, orange and soft blue reflected across the lakes.

Good to Know

The exact route varies throughout the season depending on weather conditions, daylight and the best opportunities to experience the forest at its quietest. The hike is designed to move with the rhythm of the evening rather than follow a strict schedule. We make frequent stops to observe nature, enjoy the scenery and answer questions along the way. Food is not included, but a traditional Swedish fika with drinks and snacks is served during the hike.
