Kayaking Stockholm: what to see on kayak tours?
Environment: We'll paddle around those polished, granite islands which have made the Stockholm archipelago famous. Created by the last ice age, they remind us of a giant who has scattered pebbles the size of cars over the Baltic Sea. We will also pass huge forest covered islands and high cliffs towering out from the water.
Wildlife: Keep an eye out for white-tailed eagles soaring overhead and ospreys diving for fish. The skies and shores teem with wild swans, geese, eider ducks, loons, arctic terns, and great cormorants. Occasionally, a grey seal might peek from the waves!

Planning your Kayak Trip
Setting out on your outing is the first stroke toward an unforgettable trip. Whether you’re a green paddler or a seasoned explorer, the mix of urban charm and wilderness invites exploration at your own tempo, surrounded by scenes that shift with the light and seasons. Stockholm's kayaking adventures vary from urban sightseeing in the city center to multi-day wild camping expeditions in nature. A fun outing is guaranteed!
Kayaking in Summer
If chasing sunsets painted in pinks and golds is your dream, the long evenings offer calm waters and lingering light around central Stockholm and the archipelago. The best time for a kayaking adventure in Stockholm is during the warmer season, which typically runs from May to late September. Peak summer (mid-June to mid-August) offers the longest daylight—up to 18 hours in June—and the warmest water temperatures, which makes for an amazing experience. The 'Magic Season' from late August to early September features warmer water for swimming and fewer tourists, making it an ideal time for a peaceful paddle.
Kayaking in Winter
Kayak tours are available year-round, including winter tours with appropriate gear provided. For a winter kayak tour dusted in snow and silence, aim for December through March, when the city slows and the islands wear a frosty crown. Green Trails offers winter day trips in the city as well as the archipelago. Guided winter kayak tours in Stockholm nature include all necessary high quality equipment for a safe and enjoyable experience. Winter paddling here means paddling in cold water and crisp air, adding a unique thrill to the experience. For the colder months, protective gear such as dry suits, poogies and neoprene gloves are essential. Winter paddling offers unique opportunities to explore Stockholm's winter beauty from the water and is suitable for both beginners and experienced paddlers. Participants in winter kayaking tours can be lucky enough to see wildlife such as seals popping up on the ice, and various bird species.
Private Kayaking Tours
For a tailored journey, private tours offered by Green Trails provide the chance to explore Stockholm’s city centre and the archipelago’s far-flung corners at your own rhythm. Family-friendly kayak tours are available, allowing children under 12 to participate when accompanied by a guardian.
Overnight Kayaking Tours
For the truly adventurous, Green Trails’ multi-day kayaking explorations include wild camping on tiny islands, complete with camping equipment and open fire cooking, allowing you to dive deep into Stockholm’s wild backcountry.
City Kayaking
The isles provide a peaceful escape from the city, characterized by its unique landscapes and calm waters. But paddling in the city is great too! On our city kayaking tour, we visit spots like the old prison island Långholmen, Södermalm, or the area around the city hall, where history and nature intertwine between the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren. Paddling around Långholmen and Reimersholme is a popular route in Stockholm. And the route around Kungsholmen is one of the most paddled routes .During early mornings, the waters in Stockholm are typically the calmest. Most kayak tours last between 2 to 4 hours, making them a manageable activity for all skill levels, which is plenty of time to explore Stockholm's central isles and numerous bridges. Being out on the water is a fun and active alternative to a walking tour in Stockholm! Stockholm is best experienced from the water.
Other things to think of
Always check the weather before launching, as wind and waves can shape your day. Conditions can make or break the day up to the point of cancellation. That is why we have partnered up with True Nature Sweden. Thanks to our two unique kayak bases in different locations, we can almost always offer sheltered waters, no matter the wind direction—ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Early mornings typically have the calmest waters for kayaking. It is safer to kayak in pairs or on guided tours unless you are experienced in solo paddling. Experienced guides will navigate changing conditions, keeping your trip safe and smooth, whether you’re on a short city paddle or a multi-day expedition. Ferries and other commercial boat trafick has right of way in Stockholm's waterways, and kayakers must yield to larger traffic.
No matter your skill, kayak tours with Green Trails promise a thoughtfully arranged, unforgettable journey through landscapes, history, and wild beauty, served by friendly staff. From the city hall’s sharp skyline to the archipelago’s quiet edges, every paddle stroke draws you closer to this city’s soul. Gather your crew, pack your adventurous spirit, and discover Stockholm from a whole new angle! Kayak tours often include opportunities for breaks, such as enjoying a traditional Swedish Fika.
