Winter Sauna Experience in Stockholm

Floating sauna in Nature, with Sunset, Stars & Winter Bathing

Escape the city for an evening by the lake, where a short hike through the forest leads to a floating sauna waiting just offshore. In winter, we walk across the frozen lake to reach the sauna. In autumn, when the ice has not yet formed, we float out on a rowing boat instead. The timing of the trip follows the early Stockholm sunset, giving us time to arrive while there is still some daylight, settle around the campfire and watch the last light disappear over the lake. As the sun sets, it is time to for the sauna! We make sure to regulate the sauna temperature to be a little under the Swedish standard to accommodate everyone and make sure that we can do several longer sittings rather rushing it through. As we sit and enjoy the heat of the fire, removing the coldness from our bodies, we can view the lake and the nature behind it through the window. For those who want to try it, we open a hole in the winter ice for a short dip in the lake. Your guide will take you through it with some simple breathing techniques and help you take it at your own pace. Then it is straight back into the sauna. Instead of filling the night full of hectic activities, we make space for simply using our senses and being in the now, letting the forest, the fire, the lake, and the sauna speak for them selves.

Winter Sauna Stockholm: what to expect

Nature & surroundings: The experience takes place around a forest lake outside Stockholm, with a short hike through the surrounding nature before we reach the sauna. Depending on the time of year, the lake may be frozen and covered in snow, or open and surrounded by the colours of autumn.

Sunset: The tour is timed around sunset, which comes surprisingly early in Stockholm during the colder months. We aim to arrive at the lake with enough daylight to enjoy the surroundings before the evening settles in. On a clear evening, the last light can turn the sky pink before giving way to the darker blue of the evening.

Campfire: While the sauna heats up, we gather around the campfire. There will be snacks, a light dinner and something warm to drink — including mulled wine.

Sauna: The sauna is floating on the lake, with a window looking out over the water. In winter, reaching it means walking across the ice; during the ice-free season, we take a rowing boat.

Winter bathing: During winter, we can open a hole in the ice for anyone who would like to try a dip in the lake. This is completely optional. Your guide can talk you through the basics of breathing and help you take the plunge in a controlled way. And, most importantly, the sauna is right there afterwards.
